Dear Geral Sosbee (Attorney ) Sosbee:   Thank you for contacting me regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this important matter.   I have concerns about FBI overreach and a lack of transparency. Inspector General Horowitz uncovered numerous material omissions and errors in application for surveillance warrants of President Trump's campaign. Similarly, Special Counsel John Durham concluded that "the [Department of Justice] and the FBI failed to uphold their important mission of strict fidelity to the law" when investigating President Trump's campaign.1   These are deeply concerning conclusions. All federal agencies, including the FBI, must be transparent, apolitical, and accountable to the American people. This is especially important for the FBI given it has the power to investigate, arrest, and recommend federal criminal charges. Our system of justice-where everyone is equal under the law-relies on the FBI enforcing the law.   The majority of men and women who serve in the FBI do so with distinction. Their work is critical to our democracy and our national security. Most FBI employees focus their work on protecting child victims, bringing dangerous criminals to justice, and preventing cyber-attacks on our critical infrastructure. This work must continue.   In light of the concerns highlighted by both Inspector General Horowitz and Special Counsel Durham, we must continue aggressive efforts to hold the FBI accountable. I am committed to finding ways to ensure more transparency and accountability for the FBI and reform this critical institution.
